Fee, fi, fo, fum!

Last week in 1D was great fun. In our literacy lessons, we continued our exploration of traditional tales. Firstly, we looked at the well known story of "Jack and the Beanstalk" and then we examined the lesser known title "Jim and the Beanstalk". Whereas Jack stole from the giant: gold coins, a hen that laid golden eggs and a singing harp, Jim was a very good boy and helped the giant.
He helped the giant see by getting him giant glasses, he helped the giant eat by getting him giant teeth and he helped the giant look handsome by getting him a giant wig.
The book was a very enjoyable read and we all worked together to make a vocabulary bank of words describing the characters in the story.
We also wrote book reviews and created storyboards using the laptops.

Other exciting work included:
- Looking at odd and even numbers and number sequences in Numeracy.
- Learning about Advent in R.E.
- Drawing a map of our school in Geography.

I hope everyone is having a nice weekend and ready for school tomorrow.

Finally, well done to BrownBear623, BrownBear604, BrownBear625 and BrownBear594 for their Tutpup work this weekend.

Tripp, Trapp, Tripp, Trapp, BANG, BANG, BANG!

This week we have been examining traditional tales in our Literacy lessons. We have had great fun role playing and writing about 'The Three Little Pigs' and 'The Three Billy Goats Gruff'.
We had a big writing day today! I asked the children to retell their favourite one of these tales in their literacy books.
This was very difficult as there was a lot to remember - which house got blown down first? what did the pigs say? what did the wolf say? how does a traditional tale begin? ... on top of this, we really had to concentrate on our phonics to get our spellings right!!!

In Science, we continued to look at 'Light and Dark'. I created a dark room for the children under the table. I passed in objects for them to feel and discover using their sense of touch. Last week some children didn't get a chance to go into the dark space so it was important that those children experienced complete darkness this week.

In R.E. we started a new topic entitled 'Birthdays'. We will be studying this topic for the rest of the term. We will learn about advent and celebrate the birth of Jesus.

The top 3 Tutpuppies at the moment are: BrownBear636, BrownBear574 and BrownBear623.
All can change very quickly though as it's close at top!!!

Have a nice weekend 1D,
Mr Devereux

Hard at work...

Firstly, a big well done to all the 'Tutpuppies' who worked at home this week. Some of the BrownBear's are scoring really high and I've even managed to play against a few of you!!! ... so watch out for me!!!

In Literacy, we've produced amazing work in the last few days - especially in poetry. We have studied various poems with a focus on verses, rhyme and repeating patterns. I've even seen some children buying poetry books. This made me very happy as it displays a real interest in what they're learning.

In Maths, we looked at the clock - I was very surprised with all the great work done for homework!! The children were brilliant at telling the time, especially the o'clocks and half-pasts. We even managed to do some weighing yesterday and we had great fun measuring today. I measured all the childrens heights... can anyone remember their height?

In Science we have continued to look at light and dark. That was quite exiciting, especially because of the black-out sheet. I think we will use it again next week!

In RE we have been looking at God's creations and we made a collage to celebrate them.

Once again, it's been a really action packed week!!!
I hope you all have a great weekend and I'll see you bright and early on monday morning.

Tutpup update

Dear Parents,

I've created an account for each child in 1D on the Tutpup website (www.tutpup.com).
This is a free educational games site which will help children with their maths and literacy skills.
It would be brilliant if you could spend some time exploring this site with your child over the next few days.
I have placed information on how to login to this site in the children's bookbags.

I would be grateful for any feedback by way of comments.

I will be posting more information and photographs of children's work later in the week.

Tutpup

Dear parents, I have been looking at a website which I think is extremely exciting. It is designed to help children improve their numeracy and spelling skills.
Children can compete against each other via the internet or even compete against children in different countries.
Check it out and see what you think!
I will provide more information on using this product soon.
